CTAT Mentor Program

The CTAT Mentoring Program designed to help new professionals access a support network and professional and career development.

Participation is open to members working in a CTE role for three years or less. The program lasts nine months September through June. Applications are due annually in May. To apply, complete and submit the application and provide a current headshot.

Mentors are experienced professionals who provide information, advice, support, and encouragement. Mentors serve as trusted advisors for issues and challenges encountered on the job and alternative perspectives in terms of problem identification and problem solving.

Program Goals

 

  • Help professionals with fewer than three years in their role become supported and connected

  • Develop professionalism to increase likelihood of career promotions and advancement

  • Provide guidance in an area of education where mentoring is not readily available

  • Provide an opportunity for members to engage in meaningful professional development

  • Facilitate knowledge sharing

  • Develop emerging talent for future leadership positions

 

The Role of Mentor

 

  • Participate in mentor training offered in person at the summer conference or virtually offered during August

  • Schedule initial meeting or call to review the application and goals by Sept. 15

  • Discuss key topics and ask questions to check for understanding

  • Connect at least 10 times over the course of the program Sept - June

  • Monitor and participate in dedicated mentor platform on ConnectCTAT

  • Encourage the exploration of ideas

  • Provide appropriate and timely advice

  • If feasible, schedule a site visit with teacher mentee participants

  • Invite mentees to participate in CTAT area meetings

  • Encourage participants to attend CTAT conferences for training and professional development

  • Suggest appropriate skills training and/or books and articles

  • Serve as a source of information and resources

 

Expectations for Mentees

 

  • Clearly define goals and expectations with mentor

  • Be open to receiving feedback and coaching

  • Take responsibility for professional growth and development

  • Seek challenging assignments and implement new ideas or solutions

  • Provide feedback to mentor on progress

  • Keep commitments agreed to with mentor

  • Renegotiate the mentoring relationship when personal or professional needs change
