Teacher Certification
On July 23, the State Board of Education (SBOE) reveiwed new rules for teacher certification requirements for the career and technical education (CTE) courses effective for the fall of 2010 as presented by the State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC).
The SBOE took no action, which means the new rules become effective as approved by SBEC for the coming school year.
Advance documentation of the new certification requirements can be accessed at the links below.
If a student takes a course that may satisfy a graduation requirement but the student does not need the course to count toward a specific graduation requirement the course would count as elective credit. For example, if a student has taken biology, IPC, chemistry and physics the student has satisfied the science requirements and any additional science courses that are successfully completed would count as elective credit.
A district cannot make the decision to offer a CTE course that may satisfy a graduation requirement only for elective credit because 19 TAC Chapter 74 specifically allows students to satisfy certain graduation requirements by successfully completing certain CTE courses and districts have not been given authority to disallow what is allowed by administrative rule.
